The World From 35,000 Feet

When I was a child, I thought Heaven was above the clouds. I would see airplanes flying high up in the sky and wonder what they could see from up there. Was it Heaven they saw?
Even though I have flown thousands of miles around the world, I am still not the biggest fan of flying. It is boring and the turbulence can get scary. However, one thing that I have found to relieve me on these long flights is getting a window seat and finding the beauty up high in the sky. From cloud formations to colorful sunsets to snow-capped mountains, I have now seen what is above the clouds. These are some of the best views that I have gotten while flying 35,000 feet above the world:
As I was flying to Costa Rica on Copa Airlines, I caught one of the most beautiful sunsets that I have ever seen in the sky. This was somewhere over Mississippi. The orange, yellow and purple colors popping out were gorgeous.

This is another beautiful view as we flew to Costa Rica. The cloud coverage and the sunset slightly peaking out through the clouds with the little bit of blue in there made for an amazing view.

One of my favorite parts of flying is seeing natural landmarks from above. This photo was taken from somewhere around Utah. If you know airplanes at all, you immediately recognize Southwest Airline's colors -- the blue, red and yellow on their planes really pop out in the sky. Other airlines are mostly an off-white color with a simple design on the airplane while Southwest airplanes are usually blue.

As I was flying into Salt Lake City on Alaskan Airlines, I saw the mountain backdrop behind Provo, Utah. Seeing a city with snow-capped mountains towering above, I was immediately excited for my upcoming trip to Utah.

The world is 71% water, so when going oversees, you typically are flying over an ocean rather than land. When I flew to Hawaii on United Airlines, it was at least four hours straight over the Pacific Ocean. I saw nothing, but ocean for hours. All of a sudden -- the islands of Hawaii appeared out of nowhere. Seeing islands appear after miles of ocean is always a fun aspect of flying.

That flight to Costa Rica on Copa Airlines just had an amazing sunset. The colors slightly above the clouds are absolutely beautiful!

I love city views from above as I am flying. I, especially, like this one as Air Canada has a Canadian Maple Leaf on the wing. This flight was as I was flying to Manitoba, Canada.

As I was flying into Zurich, Switzerland on Swiss Air, the sunrise wth the sun peaking out from over the clouds was beautiful The sunlight blaring through the clouds and the light reflection on the clouds were amazing.

When I went to Alaska, I went to Katmai National Park. There are no roads to get to Katmai -- the only option is flying. I flew on a nine passenger Cessna plane on Katmai Air. It was my first experience taking that small of a plane, and seeing rural Alaska made the first time plane experience worth it.

Flying to Dublin Ireland on Aer Lingus, the shamrock on the wing with a city view and lake was a beautiful view and transported my mind right to Ireland.

Flying into Costa Rica on Copa Airlines, I had a layover in Panama City. I was not expecting to see hundreds of ships lined to go through the Panama Canal. I have never seen that many ships in my life, and it really put it into prescriptive how important the Panama Canal is for ship transportation.

As I descended into Anchorage on Alaskan Airlines, I saw the snow-capped mountains stretch across the horizon and after months of planning, the first glimpse of Alaska made the upcoming adventure feel real.

This is another city view on Swiss Air as I was on my way to Zurich, Switzerland. The snow-capped mountains in the background with the lake gave me the Swiss vibes I was looking forward to.
